A Little Wine for Your Stomach’s Sake

Sometimes the value of alcohol in the life of a senior citizen can be a source of controversy. If you have enjoyed a moderate use of alcohol throughout your adult life, it can be pretty insulting when someone takes that away from you as though you were a teenager without the ability to handle adult life in a responsible way. But to look at the issue of alcohol use in senior citizens from the perspective of your children or caregivers, there are ways that alcohol could be a medical problem during this time of life when health issues seem to become more central to your daily life. However, medical science tells us that one glass of red wine taken before bed can be the best medicine there is. This is not new information even though the medical world would like us to think this was a big breakthrough. As far back as the bible, there is advice that says we should have a little wine for the stomach and other ailments. Maybe the modern world is just catching up with the wisdom of ancient worlds and the outcome will be a healthier and happier senior years for you. Red wine can have some very positive effects on how our bodies process foods and in dealing with the areas of health that sometimes can be a problem. What that bible reference is saying is that wine helps digestion. And that is what doctors are telling us as well because a reasonable serving at wine during or after supper introduces a healthy level of alcohol to the system which empowers the digestive process. The outcome is you digest your food better which makes you healthier over all, keeps the digestive track cleaned out and reduces the incidence of indigestion or heart burn. That’s not bad for something that tastes so good and makes you feel good as well. Wine has also been well known for years to be a beneficial substance for calming the nerves. Now this can be taken to the extreme but to have a small serving of wine when you are upset is often the prescribed treatment to help you calm down and to reduce nervous anxiety as the result of stress. Red wine in particular is often directly prescribed for patients suffering with anemia. The beneficial vitamins and nutrients in red wine, empowered by that small serving of alcohol, can help reduce the incidence of anemic blood cells and make your blood richer and more able to do it’s job in your body. Finally, wine can do a lot as a sleep aid. Again, this can lead to abuse but in moderation, a small serving of wine just before bed and help you ease into sleep naturally and stay asleep throughout the night. That good night’s sleep can be highly recuperative and have a positive effect on just about every aspect of health. You will rise rested, feeling good, energetic and ambitious to get up and do something good with your day. It’s worth our time to take a second look at alcohol for the healthy things it does especially for senior citizens. Too often healthy adult diet elements such as coffee or alcohol get categorized with cigarettes as evil because in a few extreme cases, these substances caused problems. But a mature outlook on the good that can come from moderate use of these substances can counter the “urban myth” that all alcohol consumption is bad. After all, if that were true, it wouldn’t be in the bible that we should take a little wine each day for our health. And, as they say, if it’s good enough for the heroes of the bible, it’s good enough for you and I today.

"Thousands of former participants have continued on through college and successful careers," said meet director Fred Thompson. "They inevitably return to tell us that the games had such a significant impact on their lives." The Colgate Women's Games, which officially open the women's indoor track season, have become a national proving ground, annually setting the pace for the season. Participants, primarily from the East Coast, travel to New York from as far as Boston and Virginia. "Our girls are among the most heavily recruited female athletes by colleges and universities across the country," Thompson said. "Thousands have received college scholarships from their schools and earned financial help with tuition and supplies from their Colgate grants."

Remember those families who kissed their sons and daughters good bye and had the heart wrenching experience of waving their heroes good bye; watching them until they are out of sight, not knowing when and if they will return. The Alexander Technique was invented by a man named F.M. Alexander. He lived from 1869-1955. He was an actor, touring Tasmania and Australia with a Shakespearean troupe. He began to have problems with his voice, and the rest is history. When Alexander's throat became extremely hoarse, he made the rounds of all the doctors where he was at any given time. None of them could help him. They could not find any physical reason for the problem. The Alexander Technique came about because the man would not take no for an answer. Since there was no one to come to his aid, Alexander began watching his every move. He spent much time looking into mirrors, trying to determine what he might be doing wrong. Over a period of nine years, he came up with a solution: the Alexander Technique. The system Alexander designed did the trick of restoring his voice. This was nothing short of a miracle for him. His voice was of utmost importance to him as an actor. He did not name the system the Alexander Technique, though. He named it primary control. The hypothesis of the Alexander Technique is that the head, neck, and torso are the primary factors in determining function, movement, and posture. In other words, these body parts control these features of the human anatomy. Through his observations, he learned that by compressing these body parts, the body did not work in accordance with its design. In his case, this led to poor posture, which resulted in the hoarseness of his voice. For others, he saw that there were other problems that the Alexander Technique, or primary control, could help. Primary control, as Alexander used it was the correct positioning of the head, neck, and torso so that the body worked normally. Now, the Alexander Technique is being used in clinics around the country. It is taught to people who are young and people who are old. It is taught to anyone comes to be taught. Alexander Technique practitioners usually work with people on an individual basis. Groups can sometimes be taught the Alexander Technique, but this is not standard practice. The key is for the practitioner to employ physiotherapy techniques and education to help the person to use their body better and function better overall. The idea of the Alexander Technique is to provide a physiotherapy that will allow muscles to become relaxed. This is said to give people back the posture they should have had all along. The body is worked with the human form as a whole, and so doing the Alexander Technique is said to have effects for all parts of the body. The Alexander Technique is a highly specialized area of physiotherapy. This technique addresses issues that are related to posture only, albeit there are many problems that are. It is generally not used for people with major disabilities or illnesses. Other forms of physiotherapy are better for those patients.
